Cortona
Hillside town | Tuscany, Italy
Often called the jewel of the Valdichiana, Cortona is the kind of hilltop town that makes you feel like you've stepped straight into a film. If it looks familiar, that's because it starred as the backdrop for Frances Mayes' beloved memoir and film "Under the Tuscan Sun." Perched at nearly 600 metres above sea level, this ancient Etruscan town predates even Rome itself, and its layered history shows in every mossy stone staircase and crumbling archway. Wander up to the Piazza della Repubblica for sweeping views over the valley, or follow the lanes up to the Medici Fortress where the panorama stretches all the way to Lake Trasimeno on a clear day. In the early morning, before the day-trippers arrive, Cortona is pure magic.
